Receiving a Valentine’s Day Explosion Box full of goodies is really fun for any college student. Most college students have to watch their spending,
so an explosion box filled with goodies will make them smile.

A Valentine’s Day explosion box is so much fun to make and send. A DIY surprise care package is special because it is filled with personalized gift with goodies.
We have a Freshman and Junior in college and sending love in a care package will make their day special.
Follow along to see how I put together this surprise box for our kids who are away at college.
This post is about how I created a Valentine’s Day Explosion Box
filled with goodies for my college age kids.
CANDY AND GIFT CARDS ARE USED TO FILL THE
VALENTINE’S DAY EXPLOSION BOX

Target was stocked with lots goodies, so I filled each Valentine’s Day Explosion Box with candy and gift cards. It was so much fun shopping for items to place into the Valentine’s Day explosion box. I found a darling heart shaped necklace which was the perfect surprise to place in the little heart shaped box.
VALENTINE’S DAY EXPLOSION BOX SUPPLIES
Michaels® had the rest of the supplies I needed to create the Valentine’s Day explosion box. I bought some Gift Boxes by Celebrate It™, heart shaped box, pink spray paint by ColorShot, Krylon Spray Adhesive and heart wrapping paper. Not only was the heart patterned wrapping paper 40% off, but all regular priced items were an additional 30% off! Michaels® has some great coupons and they came in handy. Suggestion: You can also check the Dollar Store for small boxes that are already decorated. This will make the Explosion Box easier and quicker to create.

VALENTINE’S DAY EXPLOSION BOX INSTRUCTION
1 | Gather Some Supplies.
Supplies include: a knife, double sided tape or tape gun (I use a Scotch ATG 700), and a self healing cutting mat.

3M Scotch ATG 700 Adhesive Applicator, 1/2 in and 3/4 in wide rolls, Yellow

X-ACTO Z-Series #2 Precision Knife with Cap

2 | Carefully Cut Each Box Apart.
Use the straight edge ruler to cut each corner of the box and flatten it out. Be careful not to cut yourself by keeping your fingers out of the way and be sure to cut slowly. Suggestion: using a scissors to trim off the excess paper is much safer but edges will not be as straight.

3 | Coat Outside of Box with Spray Adhesive.
Coat the outside of the box with spray adhesive, I used Krylon Spray Adhesive. Quickly, but gently flip the box over onto the backside of the wrapping paper. Then press down so it adheres to the paper. Be sure to place paper down or your floor will be sticky. If you do not want to use spray adhesive, you can also use double-sided tape to secure the decorative paper.

4 | Carefully Trim Off the Excess Paper.
Use your knife to trim around the outside of the Valentine Day explosion box. Make sure your blade is sharp so the paper doesn’t tear. Once again, watch your fingers, the blade is sharp. Suggestion: Though not as precise, using a scissors to trim off the excess paper is much safer.

5 | Spray Paint the Lids.
I chose Farmer’s Daughter by ColorShot to match the wrapping paper. Place some newspaper on the floor before you spray paint the Valentine’s Day explosion box lids. This took about three coats. Let it dry overnight. Please note: spray paints can be hazardous, so make sure you have proper ventilation. You may even want to consider protective gear. Suggestion: You can also leave the box tops plain white and decorate with colorful paper and stickers.

6 | Tape Down the Treats.
Use a tape gun to stick the candy down to the inside flaps of the largest Valentine’s Day explosion box. After you have taped all the treats to the flaps, you can tape the smaller box to the center. Suggestion: You can also use Scotch double stick tape which works just as well.

7 | Add Gift Cards to Flaps of the Smaller Box.
Add more candy and decorate with heart stickers so it is really colorful. Add a couple pieces of tape to the bottom of the heart box. Then stick it to the center of the medium size Valentine’s Day explosion box. I placed the necklace I bought for my daughter into the small heart box. Then I placed the bracelet I bought for my son into the other heart box.

8 | Carefully place all the lids on the boxes.
Be carefully not to rip the paper and finally secure with a bow. I found this beautiful ribbon at the Dollar Store! I am so happy with how these little Valentine’s Day explosion boxes turned out. I’m really excited to get them in the mail.

Our college kids will be so excited to open their Valentine’s Day explosion boxes Full of Love! The post office has large shipping boxes available, so I grabbed
two of them which were the perfect size. I decorated the inside flaps and mailed them off to the kids.
This idea is also perfect for other holidays too. CLICK HERE to check out my Mother’s Day Explosion Box post! My mom loved it and showed all of her friends.
