My mom is 87 years young and has everything she needs. It’s hard to think of special gifts for a mom who has everything. This year, I decided to make a fun gift, a Mother’s Day exploding gift box full of goodies. Our kids loved the Valentine’s Day Explosion Box, so I thought it would be a fun Mother’s Day gift too.
This post is about creating an exploding gift box for Mother’s Day.

1 | Buy Goodies To use in the Exploding Gift Box
It was so much fun shopping for items to place into this Mother’s Day exploding gift box. A darling “MOM” necklace from Target was the perfect surprise to place in the smallest box. Gift cards included a Gas card, a grocery gift card, a Kohl’s gift card and a gift card from Marshalls. Any packaged candy can be used, my mom likes mints and chocolate.

1 | Gather Some Supplies.
Before you start on your exploding gift box, you will need a few supplies. You will need a knife, tape gun (I use a Scotch ATG 700), and a self healing cutting mat. If you don’t have a tape gun, just use double-sided tape.

Gift wrap, Gift Boxes by Celebrate It™, and Krylon Spray Adhesive were purchased at Michael’s®. Not only was the Kraft patterned wrapping paper 40% off, but all regular priced items were an extra 30% off! Michael’s has some great coupons and they came in handy. Suggestion: You can also check the Dollar Store for small boxes for the exploding gift box.

2 | Carefully Cut Each Box Apart.
Use the straight edge ruler to cut each corner of the gift box and flatten it out. Be careful not to cut yourself by keeping your fingers out of the way. Make sure to cut slowly. Suggestion: using a scissors to trim off the excess paper is much safer, but edges will not be as straight.

3 | Coat Outside of Box with Spray Adhesive.
Coat the outside of the exploding gift box with spray adhesive, I used Krylon Spray Adhesive. Flip the box over onto the backside of the wrapping paper and press so it adheres to the paper. Be sure to place paper down or your floor will be sticky. If you do not want to use spray adhesive, you can also use double-sided tape to secure the decorative paper.

4 | Carefully Trim Off the Excess Paper.
Use your knife to trim around the outside of the Mother’s Day exploding gift box. Make sure your blade is sharp so the paper doesn’t tear. Once again, watch your fingers, the blade is sharp. Suggestion: Though not as precise, using a scissors to trim off the excess paper is much safer.

5 | Tape Down the Treats.
Use a tape gun to stick the candy down to the inside flaps of the largest exploding gift box flap. Tape all of the treats to the flaps, then tape the smaller box to the center.
Suggestion: You can also use Scotch double stick tape which works just as well.

6 | Add Gift Cards to Flaps of the Smaller Box.
Decorate the box with candy so it is really colorful. Place a couple pieces of tape on the bottom of the necklace box. Stick it to the center of the medium exploding gift box. My mom loves gift cards, so I chose some of her favorites. The gift cards are always appreciated, but the necklace placed inside of the smaller box was extra special.

7 | Carefully place all the lids on the boxes.
Finally, place the smaller box into the larger box. Be careful not to rip the paper and finally secure with a bow. I found this beautiful Burlap Gift Bow by Celebrate It™ at Michael’s®! This Mother’s Day exploding gift box turned out amazing and I was so excited for Mom to open it.

We took my mom out for dinner and she opened the explosion box. She had so much fun as the flaps unfolded. You are never too old to get a fun gift like this. Instead of guessing what to buy, make your mom’s day fun by giving her something original. Create a Mother’s Day Exploding gift box filled with gift cards she can use.
