Ready to give your doorstep a makeover?
This post is all about how I make DIY doormats.

1 | Gather Supplies for your DIY DOormat
Walmart had everything I needed to get started on this fun project! I picked up a Mainstays Coir Doormat (18″ x 30″) for $6.97, which is the perfect size for layering. Made of high-pile coir and has a skid-resistant bottom.
For the design, I used Flex Seal Liquid Rubber Sealant Coating ($14.87) to ensure a long-lasting stencil application. Ballpoint pins were another essential, and Walmart had the most budget-friendly choice at around $2.97.
To create the stencil, I used inexpensive vinyl for my Cricut® template. You can easily find the vinyl at Walmart or even at the Dollar Store. It’s also handy to have a 12″ x 24″ Green Grip Adhesive Sticky Cricut Mat.
With just these supplies, you’re ready to start crafting your own personalized DIY doormat!

2 | Create and cut your stencil using a Cricut
Create a design from scratch or upload an image, then adjust the size and layout to fit your project. Position the material onto a cutting mat. Load it into your Cricut machine, cut and finally weed out any excess material.

3 | Vacuum the Mat and Cut the longer threads
Before applying tape or your stencil, be sure to vacuum up any loose fibers. After vacuuming, use scissors to trim any longer strands.

4 | apply tape to the mat to use as a guide
Apply tape to the DIY doormat as straight as possible so you can create a centered area for your stencil. I positioned the tape approximately 4 inches from the top and bottom of the doormat.

Use a Sharpie to mark the center of the mat. Then, you can accurately align your stencil on your DIY doormat.

5 | Carefully Apply the stencil to the Mat
Slowly peel back the stencil from the mat. Next peel off half of the backer paper and apply to the mat. It will not stick well, but try to line up the best that you can. After you have the main part of the stencil placed, peel off the small middle pieces from the cutting mat. Secure them to the doormat as well.

The vinyl doesn’t stick well, so add pins to hold it down to the mat. Additionally, apply tape to cover the mat. For extra coverage, I also used contact paper to protect the exposed areas of the mat.

6 | APPLY THE FLEX SEAL Liquid Rubber Sealant and COAT THE STENCIL
Be sure to hold the can directly over the stencil, not at an angle. Then, spray evenly over the stencil, ensuring it is completely covered.

Allow the sealant to dry overnight before carefully removing the tape and stencil.

7 | REMOVE THE PINS
The pins will be covered with the sealant; however, you can save them to use when making future diy doormats.

8 | FINALLY, REMOVE THE STENCIL
Removing the stencil is incredibly satisfying. Make sure you allow it to dry completely before removing the tape and stencil.

Tada! This DIY doormat is finished! It turned out great, and this project was so much fun! Now, place it at your doorstep and enjoy your handmade creation!
